Lautaro Martinez was a minor figure in Argentina’s World Cup victory, but he could really cement his star status by guiding Inter to European glory in the Champions League.
Once the least favorite figure in his partnership with Romelu Lukaku, Lautaro is now a talismanic figure for Inter, exemplified by his goal in the 1-0 win over AC Milan in the Champions League semi-final. This chance for European silverware is vitally important for the 25-year-old, especially after the World Cup in Qatar. Although he lifted the trophy with Argentina, Lautaro did not play a particularly key role in their success. Now he has the chance to change that. While Inter enter the Champions League final as obvious outsiders, regardless of the outcome of the other semi-final, there are far fewer expectations for Simone Inzaghi and his team, which gives them a slight psychological advantage. The 25-year-old has looked much better this season after the mid-season break and his confidence will be high heading to Istanbul, giving him the chance to really make history with Inter.
