Hakan Calhanoglu has been one of Inter’s star players since he arrived there for free from Milan in the summer of 2021, a transfer that continues to cause a stir despite the passing years. Max Mirabelli, the Milan sporting director who recruited the Turk in 2017, spoke to Tuttosport about the reasons for his departure:

“The truth is that they wanted to erase the work I had done. Milan should have fought to keep him and not let him go for free, as they did with Donnarumma and Kessie. The tifosi think he betrayed the club, but it was Milan who didn’t want to keep him, not Calhanoglu who wanted to leave Milan. He’s a player who makes the difference, the gap between the two clubs could be reversed if Calha had stayed.”
