Chris Smalling admits it’s been one of the toughest seasons of his career, but he’s delighted with his team-mates’attitude against AC Milan.
Smalling started his first Europa League game of the season last night, helping Roma to a 1-0 victory over AC Milan in the first leg of their quarter-final tie. The former Manchester United defender had made just seven Serie A appearances prior to Thursday’s game at the San Siro.
“It was a special evening. It was one of the toughest games of my career, and I’m happy to have helped the team. We occupied every space with great confidence and deserved to win. Daniele De Rossi has given the whole club a great lift. Everyone fights and wants to play,” he told Sky Sport. Roma’s next match is against Udinese at Bluenergy Stadium on Sunday. The return leg against AC Milan will be played at the Stadio Olimpico next week, on Thursday April 18. The Giallorossi are currently 5th in the Serie A table with 55 points from 31 games, and are unbeaten in the league since February 10.
