Two Inter players were included by UEFA in their annual Champions League Team of the Season after the conclusion of the final between the Nerazzurri and eventual winners Manchester City on Saturday night. Two of Simone Inzaghi’s five defenders made the final cut, with Alessandro Bastoni and Federico Dimarco included in UEFA’s official squad.
Bastoni started in 12 of Inter’s 13 games in the competition this season, collecting three assists in group stage matches against Barcelona and Viktoria Plzen and against Benfica in the first leg of the quarter-finals. Dimarco was also a mainstay of Inzaghi’s team during the European season, playing 11 Champions League matches. The 25-year-old also provided five assists in the Champions League this season, more than any other defender in the competition, with Kevin De Bruyne the only player to provide more in 2022-23 .
However, there was no place for Andre Onana in the UEFA Team of the Season, despite the fact that he recorded more saves than any other goalkeeper this season. Similarly, there was no room for another Serie A representative, although Inter and AC Milan made up 50% of the competition’s semi-finalists. Napoli players were also omitted from the eventual team of the season. Instead, UEFA selected seven members of Manchester City’s team, as well as two from Real Madrid, namely Vinicius Jr. and Thibaut Courtois.
