Tonight, Atalanta take on Real Madrid in the European Supercup, a first in the history of the Bergamo-based club. It’s a tough challenge, but Atalanta could become the fifth Italian club to win this European competition.
4th: Lazio and Parma
Lazio won the European Supercup in 1999, in the last edition of the competition between the winners of the Champions League and the Cup of Cups. Parma beat Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United 1-0 thanks to a goal from Marcelo Salas. Parma won the 1993 edition against Milan, losing 1-0 in the first leg, but winning 2-0 in the return at the San Siro.
2nd: Juventus
Juventus were the first Italian club to win the European Supercup, in 1985 against Liverpool, thanks to a brace from Zibi Boniek. In 1996, they doubled their success with a double victory over PSG, 6-1 at the Parc des Princes and 3-1 in Palermo, where the return leg was played. It should be noted that the Old Lady were unable to take part in the 1985 edition after winning their first European Champion Clubs’Cup. Their opponents, Everton, were suspended from all European competitions, as were all English clubs, following the Heysel tragedy.
1st : AC Milan
Milan dominate the European Supercup honours list for the Italians, with five victories to their name, a record shared with Barca and Real Madrid, who could well break the record tonight. In 1989 against Barca, in 1990 against Sampdoria, in 1994 against Arsenal, in 2003 against Porto and in 2007 against Sevilla, the last edition won by an Italian club. Filippo Inzaghi, Kakà and Marek Jankulovski were the scorers for Milan.
Finally, two other Italian clubs have competed in this competition without winning it: the aforementioned Sampdoria and Inter, beaten by Atletico Madrid in 2010.
