Ciro Immobile was named captain of the Italian national team in September 2023, but only missed out on a call-up a month later. Luciano Spalletti, coach of the Squadra Azzurra, justifies this absence. The former Napoli coach believes that the Lazio striker is not currently at the top of his game, and that there are far better players out there.
“As far as Immobile is concerned, we consider him to be a very important player whom we always follow with total attention, like all the players. We attend matches and training sessions, even though I haven’t been to Lazio yet. For the moment, it seems to me that the other three players I’ve called up (Raspadori, Kean, Scamacca, editor’s note) are in better shape”, said Luciano Spalletti, who has no intention of doing himself any favours in his choices. Lacking success in front of goal, Ciro Immobile has gradually lost his place as an undisputed starter with Lazio Rome. In 15 games across all competitions, the Italian striker has scored 4 goals, including three in the league. A situation he will have to work on if he is to return to the national team.
