Tiémoué Bakayoko, a defensive midfielder by training, spent two years at AC Milan between 2021 and 2023. It was an experience that didn’t go down well, as he only played 21 games in two years. The Frenchman says he regrets his time in Lombardy.

“After the season in Naples, I returned to Milan, who had courted me, always on loan. I think they wanted me, but not the coach (Pioli, editor’s note). The first season, I played a bit. I made my contribution, but I don’t feel like an Italian champion,” began the former Chelsea player to L’Equipe. He goes on to reveal how he felt during the entire period without playing for AC Milan. “At the end of the season, I was torn apart. My family and I had found a home, and it’s nice to stay with the same club two years in a row. But I felt I wasn’t part of the project. I was looking elsewhere, but I didn’t find what I was looking for. I gave myself time until the winter mercato. The manager told me he wasn’t counting on me too much, and that was a slap in the face to my ego! I had opportunities, but the clubs couldn’t afford my salary. I was ready to make an effort, but not to divide it by two or three. So I arrive at the end of the season, often in a group,” he continues. He concludes by revealing that the choice of AC Milan is certainly the biggest regret of his career. “The only regret in my career is this two-year loan: I should only have signed for one year,” he insists.
