Luciano Spalletti is about to announce his squad for the forthcoming European Championship, so which players will he drop from the list?
Tournament guidelines stipulate that only 26 players can be included in the squad, forcing the coach and his team to reduce his list to 29 players. The decision is due to be confirmed in Coverciano on Thursday evening. Calciomercato.com and TMW both suggest that three roles in the Italian squad will be reduced – a goalkeeper, a midfielder and a striker or winger. Changes can still be made until June 14. Starting at the back, there are two certainties in the run-up to Euro 2024, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Guglielmo Vicario. This leaves a place open for Alex Meret or Ivan Provedel, with much depending on the former’s physical condition. In midfield, there are apparently two candidates likely to be left at home, either Samuele Ricci or Nicolo Fagioli. Both did well in the internal friendlies against the U20 team and Turkey, and it’s an open race to see which one will be left out of the Italian squad for the European Championship. Finally, there is the front line, where one winger is likely to be left out of Italy’s configuration, the two in doubt being Mattia Zaccagni and Riccardo Orsolini.
