Yann Sommer made some key interventions during Inter’s victory over Napoli on Sunday and was named MOTM by the Nerazzurri fans, prompting La Gazzetta dello Sport to claim that André Onana would not be missed at the Stadio Meazza.
Inter are the least beaten defense in Serie A this season, conceding just seven goals in 14 games. Sommer has kept nine clean sheets in league matches this season and contributed to a 3-0 victory over Napoli on Sunday with some crucial saves. La Gazzetta dello Sport analyzed Sommer’s performance at the Stadio Maradona, pointing out that the Swiss international made at least two vital saves to deny Partenopei midfielder Eljif Elmas. Sommer’s outstanding performance came just days after Manchester United’s 3-3 draw with Galatasaray in the Champions League, in which former Inter goalkeeper Onana was far from impressive.
The Cameroon international moved to Old Trafford last summer for around 50 million euros, and Inter replaced him by signing Sommer from Bayern Munich for a mere 7 million euros.
La Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Francesco Sessa noted that Inter “are no weaker” after the sale of Onana and the purchase of Sommer. On the contrary, the Nerazzurri seem even stronger defensively this season. Sommer was rated 7.5/10 by La Gazzetta dello Sport, and Inter fans chose him as man of the match at the Stadio Maradona with over 50% of the vote, beating scorers Nicolò Barella, Hakan Calhanoglu and Marcus Thuram.
