During the match between Udinese and AC Milan on Serie A matchday 21, Mike Mignan was the victim of racist insults by local fans. At the end of the match, the French goalkeeper wrote a lengthy message on Instagram, calling on the system to take responsibility.

“It wasn’t the player who was attacked, but the man and the father of the family. This isn’t the first time it’s happened to me. And I’m not the first person it’s happened to. We’ve made announcements, advertising campaigns, protocols and nothing has changed,” began the former Lille man. Maignan continued: “Today, the whole system has to take responsibility: the perpetrators, because it’s easy to act in groups and in the anonymity of the stands, the spectators in the stands, those who saw or heard everything but decided to keep quiet is an accomplice, Udinese, who only talked about interrupting the match as if nothing had happened, is also an accomplice, the authorities and the public prosecutor, if they do nothing about it, will also be an accomplice”. He concludes: “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’m not a victim. And I want to say thank you to my club, AC Milan, to my team-mates, to the referee, to the Udinese players and to all those who have sent me messages, called me, supported me in public and in private. I can’t answer everyone, but I see you, we’re together. It’s a hard fight, it will take time and courage. But it’s a fight we’ll win,” concluded the Rossoneri’s last line of defence.
