FIGC president Gabriele Gravina has confirmed the Italian federation’s confidence in Luciano Spalletti, who is unlikely to step down as head coach of the national team, despite Italy’s exit from EURO 2024 in the Round of 16 on Saturday evening.

Gravina, who also faces an uncertain future with FIGC elections scheduled for March 2025, confirmed that’there had been lengthy discussions with Spalletti following Switzerland’s defeat on Saturday. However, he said it would be “unthinkable” to sack Spalletti less than a year after his appointment. “We have nothing to hide, but we must continue to take our responsibilities. We had a long conversation with the coach yesterday, and I think it is unthinkable to solve problems by abandoning a multi-year project after eight or nine months. At the heart of our project is a coach who has been here for nine to 10 months, who hasn’t always had all the players available. Our confidence has to work, because there’s already a new challenge in 60 days’ time,” Gravina told the media at the start of his press conference in Germany on Sunday. Italy will next be in action against France in the Nations League on September 6.
