Luciano Spalletti’s Italy will be without Riccardo Calafiori for their Euro 2024 Round of 16 match against Switzerland.

Bologna’s 22-year-old center-back quickly emerged on the European scene as one of the tournament’s most prominent defenders, impressing with both his defensive qualities and his confidence going forward with the ball. He provided the assist for Mattia Zaccagni’s late equaliser against Croatia. Calafiori has shone under Thiago Motta at Bologna this season and is expected to leave the club in a high-profile transfer this summer, with Juventus seriously interested in a move. He has an estimated price tag of around €40-50 million, and has also attracted attention from abroad. Italy won’t be able to count on Calafiori for their next round-of-16 match against Switzerland at the European Championship after he picked up yellow cards for the win over Albania and the draw with Croatia, which earned him a one-match suspension. As a replacement, Spalletti will have to choose between Alessandro Buongiorno of Torino, Federico Gatti of Juventus or Gianluca Mancini of Roma.
