PGMOL has condemned Roma fans for their “unjustified and abhorrent abuse” of Europa League final referee Anthony Taylor, whose family was harassed at the airport. Jose Mourinho was highly critical of the referee’s performance and called Taylor a “fucking disgrace” when he accosted him in the stadium parking lot after the match.
Things went further when Taylor and his family were spotted at Budapest airport by Roma fans, who hurled abuse, shoved the referee and one even threw a chair as they were rushed to safety by police. “We are appalled by the unjustified and abhorrent abuse directed at Anthony and his family as he attempts to return home from refereeing the UEFA Europa League final,” read a statement from PGMOL, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited, which manages English referees, including Taylor. The Italian media were also horrified by scenes of Roma fans chanting “kill him” at Taylor. They were described as “embarrassing, humiliating and shameful scenes”, with some pointing the finger at Mourinho for creating this kind of atmosphere among Roma fans.
