Mathias Olivera left the pitch in tears during Napoli’s victory over Atalanta, and today’s tests confirmed an injury to the ligaments in his left knee.
The 26-year-old Uruguayan left-back caused concern in the Campania capital after leaving the pitch during Saturday’s 2-1 win over Atalanta, visibly upset when he was carried off the field. Olivera has played regularly for Napoli this season, seeing 956 minutes of action in 15 games. His injury forced new coach Walter Mazzarri to adapt central defender Juan Jesus on the left side of the back line. As announced by Napoli today, Olivera underwent a series of medical examinations at Villa Stuart this morning, which confirmed the presence of a grade-two injury to the medial collateral ligament of his left knee. The 26-year-old will now be out for several weeks, and Mario Rui’s injury means that Mazzarri will have to continue using Juan Jesus at left-back for the time being.
