For the September international break, Italy face Macedonia and Ukraine as part of the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign. Luciano Spalletti, the Squadra Azzurra’s new coach, has revealed his list, with Marco Verratti and Jorginho largely absent. The Tuscan coach explains the reasons for these absences.
“These will be two crucial matches, we need depth and experience at international level. This jersey is too important a gift for us to give back. We’re at the beginning of the preparation and Verratti and Jorginho, for example, it was unthinkable to bring them in without them having played a few minutes. Inside, we have to have a very recognizable behavior to play the soccer we want, there are no exceptions to that,” said Luciano Spalletti at his introductory press conference.
