After arriving at Union Berlin in the final hours of the summer transfer window, Leonardo Bonucci made his debut for the German club today. At the same time, the Italian defender set a record in Germany’s top flight.

Union Berlin hosted Hoffeinheim on Matchday 5 of the Bundesliga. The home side’s coach, Urs Fischer, decided to start Leonardo Bonucci in a three-man defense. The Italian played 80 minutes of the 0-2 defeat before giving up his place. At 36 years and 145 days, he became the oldest player to start a Bundesliga match since Carsten Linke of Hannover in August 2002, at 36 years and 326 days. As a reminder, Leonardo Bonucci freely left Juventus last summer after being left out of the professional squad.
