Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has made a surprise announcement on the radio, stating that he doesn’t intend to renovate the Stadio Maradona, and instead intends to build a new ground in the Bagnoli area.
“I’m not going to renovate the Fuorigrotta stadium, but instead I’m going to build a new stadium in Bagnoli,” said the Partenopei president in an interview with TGR Campania . Calcio e Finanza suggested that the work could have been carried out in preparation for the EURO 2032 tournament, which will be co-hosted by Italy and Turkey, but De Laurentiis’s latest claims suggest that a brand new stadium could be on the cards instead. Original construction work on the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, formerly known as the Stadio San Paolo, began in 1949 and was finally completed in 1959. The stadium has been home to Napoli ever since. Renovations were carried out both in 1989, prior to the 1990 World Cup, and in 2019, prior to the World University Games. The Stadio Maradona currently ranks as Italy’s fourth-largest ground, behind the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza at San Siro, the Stadio Olimpico and Bari’s Stadio San Nicola.
