Fabio Cannavaro admits that he would have accepted the Napoli job “for free” because it was his “dream”, but president Aurelio De Laurentiis never offered it to him.

The former Napoli, Parma, Juventus, Inter and Real Madrid defender has travelled extensively, but remains forever linked to his hometown and the club that represents it. When he was spotted sitting next to De Laurentiis in the stands during Napoli-Empoli, the last match before Rudi Garcia was sacked to make way for Walter Mazzarri, many assumed it meant he was lined up for the role. “I would have coached Napoli for free, that’s every coach’s dream. I don’t think a lack of experience is the reason I wasn’t on that list. A lot of people don’t respect the experience I gained in China, but I’m a coach and I want to work. I returned to Italy two years ago and I’m still studying, because coaching is what I want to do,” Cannavaro told Sportitalia.
