Most Italian fans on social networks are pushing for a goalkeeping change, with Guglielmo Vicario replacing Gigio Donnarumma, but Italian legends including Dino Zoff and Fabio Cannavaro are defending the PSG keeper.
Gigio is under pressure after Italy’s 1-1 draw with Northern Macedonia on Saturday. The former Milan goalkeeper conceded the equaliser at his near post and was among the most disappointing of the Azzurri in Skopje. La Gazzetta dello Sport is also putting pressure on the former Milan star, claiming that Donnarumma’s development seems to have stalled since his arrival at PSG in 2021. Journalist Andrea Masala wrote that Gigio should “not relax” and “demand more of himself before it’s too late”. A number of Italian legends interviewed by La Gazzetta defended Donnarumma ahead of Tuesday’s match against Ukraine. “It’s normal to have ups and downs. Maybe someone has forgotten what he did against England and Spain at the Euro,” said 1982 World Cup winner Dino Zoff.
