Former Milan and Italy midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has been sacked by Marseille. Several sources, including L’Equipe and Fabrizio Romano, claim that Olympique de Marseille’s board of directors have informed Gattuso of their decision to part company with immediate effect.

Marseille had appointed Gattuso in September 2023 to replace Marcelino. However, the French side have been winless since January, collecting just three points from their last five games (three draws and two defeats). As La Gazzetta reports, this is Marseille’s worst record since 1978. Marseille have failed to register a shot on target in three of their last four games, including Sunday’s defeat by Brest. At a post-match press conference on Sunday, Gattuso acknowledged the team’s poor form and apologized to the fans.
“Football needs soul, but we lack it. I have to be honest and say that we don’t deserve this shirt. You can’t play with mentality. I apologize to the fans. We’ve hit rock bottom and it’s impossible to go any further,” he declared.
