World Cup-winning captain Fabio Cannavaro admits that Roberto Mancini “made a mistake” when he left the Italian national team.

Mancini lifted the EURO 2020 trophy and set a new world record for invincibility for a national team, but abruptly announced his resignation on August 13. Barely two weeks later, he signed an extremely lucrative contract to become coach of the Saudi Arabian national team. “It was a difficult decision. He certainly could have timed it better, as it was so close to some important qualifiers, so he’s got some things wrong. Everyone is free to make their own decisions, and these are offers we think about. Mancini made his choice and must be respected, but let’s just say he could have thought about it a little earlier,” Cannavaro told Tuttosport. Mancini has been replaced by former Napoli boss Luciano Spalletti, who will make his debut in Saturday’s EURO 2024 qualifier against Northern Macedonia.
