Italy coach Luciano Spalletti has called up Stephan El Shaarawy from Roma after Nicolo Zaniolo was forced to withdraw from the team.
The Aston Villa striker was implicated on Thursday in Serie A’s growing betting scandal, and was questioned by police alongside Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali in Coverciano last night. After the news broke, both men were sent home from training camp, removing them from the team. The Serie A betting scandal is still in its early stages, and reports now suggest that at least 10 other players are involved. As announced today, El Shaarawy has been called up to replace Zaniolo in Spalletti’s Italian squad. The Azzurri face Malta on Saturday evening and England on October 17 in two Euro 2024 qualifiers. Turin talent Samuele Ricci has also joined Spalletti’s squad, called up to replace Tonali.
