Mattia Zaccagni admits that Italy’s equaliser against Croatia reminded him of Alessandro Del Piero’s goal in the 2006 World Cup semi-final. “Del Piero has always been my idol, I had his poster when I was a kid.

The Lazio winger didn’t even know if he’d be in the final squad to go to Germany for the EURO 2024 tournament, but he proved absolutely decisive with a final goal to draw 1-1 with Croatia. “Many images went through my mind. It was an indescribable emotion, it was important for us to qualify in second place and I’m very happy. Honestly, I didn’t even realize it was the last kick of the match. When the ball came to me, and it was very well taken by Calafiori, I didn’t think twice about it. Del Piero has always been my idol; I had his poster on my wall when I was a child. Before we left for Germany, Del Piero met us in the camp, then we were able to talk via Instagram too, and it was so exciting,” said Mattia Zaccagni. This victory means that Italy will face Switzerland in the Round of 16 on June 29 in Berlin.
