Roma are always on the lookout for defensive reinforcements. The names of Phil Jones, Jerome Boateng and Shkodran Mustafi have been mentioned.
The Giallorossi have been severely limited in central defense due to injuries to Chris Smalling, Diego Llorente and Marash Kumbulla.
They have recently been forced to use midfielder Bryan Cristante instead. According to Tuttomercatoweb and La Gazzetta dello Sport, manager Tiago Pinto is looking for free agents to recruit as quickly and cheaply as possible. Alternatives include Jones, who previously worked with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United and was released at the end of his contract in June. He’s still only 31 and can also play at right-back, making him a valuable asset to Roma’s squad. Boateng has just turned 35 and has been released by Olympique Lyonnais, although he was also linked with a return to Bayern Munich. Another German international is 31-year-old Mustafi, who already has some Serie A experience with Sampdoria from 2012 to 2014. He has also played for Valencia, Arsenal, Schalke 04 and Levante.
